Description

Carina is one of the largest diffuse nebulas in the sky, and one of the most interesting targets in the southern hemisphere.

Located around 8,500 light years from Earth, the nebula contains a number of open clusters and numerous large, bright O-Type stars.

The extremely bright star in the center is Eta Carinae, a highly luminous hypergiant star with around 100-150 times more mass than the sun. Some of the darker globules in the nebula can be seen having tails pointing away from the star, showing it's effect on its surroundings.

This image was taken over 3 nights in Bortle 6 skies from Perth, Western Australia. Mapped to the Hubble palette (SHO), using Bill Blanshan's SHO Normalization method after combination.
